Description
Trawled by commercial fishing boat out of Tuléar, Madagascar. Trawled in the Mozambique Channel between 300 and 500 m. This is the single silica spicule of the Monorhaphis sponge, a deepwater glass sponge, that can reach about a total length of 3 meters maximum. An introduction to this magnificent sponge is here given: https://www.deepseanews.com/2014/12/these-are-a-few-of-my-favorite-species-the-magnificent-and-very-large-sponge-monorhaphis-chuni/
A rare and unique curio, the largest biogenic silica-structure, for the natural history cabinet, rare in private and institutional collections; the basis for the idea of fiberoptica.
A number of spicules are available at lengths varying between 90 and 120 cm. Please ask for additional pictures and info on the available specimens if you want to make a selection. All are in great condition, unfortunately without the rooting system. Upon ordering we’ll look into shipping options and costs depending on country.
