Monorhaphis chuni Schulze, 1904
Monorhaphis chuni Schulze, 1904
Trawled by commercial fishing boat out of Tuléar, Madagascar. Trawled in the Mozambique Channel between 300 and 500 m. This is the single silica spicule of the Monorhaphis sponge, a deepwater glass sponge, that can reach about a total length of 3 meters maximum. An introduction to this magnificent sponge is here given: https://www.deepseanews.com/2014/12/these-are-a-few-of-my-favorite-species-the-magnificent-and-very-large-sponge-monorhaphis-chuni/ A rare and unique curio, the largest biogenic silica-structure, for the natural history cabinet, rare in private and institutional collections; the basis for the idea of fiberoptica. A number of spicules are available at lengths varying between 90 and 120 cm. Please ask for additional pictures and info on the available specimens if you want to make a selection. All are in great condition, unfortunately without the rooting system. Upon ordering we'll look into shipping options and costs depending on country.
